Cold Steel

Eight rigid inches

Of cold Steel
Plunge

Through the sun warmed crust

Into the soft moist
Material below
Earthy, fragrant, subtly fecal

Each stroke removing

A bit of living material
Insects, worms, fungi

The opening

Enlarged
By mechanical force

Cool air circulates

A small bird
Shares words of wisdom
With the world
A cock crows

Eventually the opening

Large enough to accommodate

Roots inserted

Covered and packed with soil
Tamped firmly into place
By strong competent hands.

Beginning of life

In a new place
Survival
Dependent on Nurturing
Watering fertilizing

Limbs and branches

Trimmed and pruned
Restrained and shaped

Forced to evolve

Into
The beautiful sculpture

Self Talk

She is there
Within the text
Palpable

She is there
On the phone
Youthful, exuberant

She is there
In the pixels
Energizing smile
Sparkling eyes

She is there
In collective consciousness
Loving, accepting
An evolved being

Soul
Drawn
Like moth to flame

Brain
Analyzes
Will there be love?
Will there be pain?

Will she be there
When we meet?
Or do words, sound waves and pixels
Create a mirage

Universe whispers
What does your heart say?

I go
Open and vulnerable
To the potential

Clay

Molded and shaped

Rounded
Ridged
And Smoothed

Stretched

Pinched
Pulled
Slapped
Punched
And Layered

Fingers palpating

Formless lump
Becoming structured
Evolving

Surface changed

To unique creation
(Like no other in the universe)

Baked in the kiln

By hellish fire
Emerging
Hardened
Glazed
Useful and Beautiful

RSVP

I’m having dinner at five
You could meet me
It would be nice to see you

Warm feeling in my chest
Footsteps lighter
Easy laughter

Amazing change
In outlook

Knowing
At day’s end

Will be
Your smile
Your bright eyes
Good conversation

Mundane, tedious day
Now transformed
To eager anticipation
